Controversial Accommodation Plans Passed in Oxford
16th January 2012: Permission has been granted for a new development of student flats in Oxford despite fears over noise. Locals fought against the proposal for 45 new flats (some of which will provide accommodation for international students), claiming that the street is already busy with bars and clubs.
However, councillors have approved the plans, defending student behaviour and praising the design of the new buildings. The flats will provide accommodation for the University of Oxford- one of the top universities in UK. Alongside the University of Cambridge, it regularly places in first position in UK university ranking tables, and also boasts one of the top business schools in UK.
Investors Encouraged into Student Accommodation
17th January 2012: Property investors are being encouraged to invest in student accommodation, an annual report has revealed. The capital city especially is booming, with student accommodation in London costing as much as £210 a week for a room. Thanks to the huge numbers of students at top London universities and colleges in London, there is still a shortage of accommodation despite constant new developments.
However, investors are encouraged to look not only at London, but also at a number of other cities around the UK, including Manchester student homes and Birmingham.
The report also put special emphasis on international student accommodation, pointing out that the preference is for modern, purpose built halls, which can charge above the average rent. English courses in London and other cities bring in hundreds of thousands of overseas students each year.
