Building Starts on New Student Accommodation in London

7th October 2011: Plans for a new hall of residence that will create 350 rooms of student accommodation in London have been unveiled. The development will be constructed in Islington, North London, by building firm Mansell.

The scheme is will cost around £18.5 million and it is hoped that the first students will move in for the 2013/14 academic year. As with many student halls in London, it is expected that the new development will predominantly provide accommodation for international students.

With huge numbers of students studying at top London universities, colleges in London and on English courses in London, the need for accommodation is more pressing than ever. Couple this with the lack of jobs in London for students, and there is an obvious market for budget rooms in particular.

Planning to be Approved in Birmingham

11th October 2011: The University of Birmingham is waiting to hear whether plans for a new student accommodation block will be approved. Developers are hoping that the halls will be built on the current site of the university's tennis courts and will find out if the plans have been approved on Thursday.

The new development will be able to house 35 students and will be used at least partially as international student accommodation. They will be solely for the use of students at the University of Birmingham, which is one of the top universities in the UK and regularly features highly in UK university ranking tables.

The architects behind the plans are Stephen George and Partners, and Birmingham is not the first place that they have built student accommodation. Previously they have been attracted by other top university cities, and their portfolio includes Manchester student homes amongst others.
