Who are we looking for?

We have an excellent opportunity for motivated and enthusiastic graduates to join our two-year graduate scheme, where you will spend 80% of your time developing both your general work-related skills and professional qualifications, with 20% of your working time dedicated to graduate training and development. UKAEA has a nurturing community that learns from each other.

Within the 20% training and development, there is a core suite of activities designed to develop your professional and business skills. Elements of this programme are flexible and can be tailored to your personal development needs and to those of your specific job role.

What opportunities does the graduate scheme cover?

Examples of the type of work/projects you could be involved in include:

Working within our Robotics department you could be involved in a range of projects from maintaining and updating current JET systems (the world's largest tokamak) to exploring new robotics systems for projects such as ITER (the world's largest fusion experiment).

There will be a mixture of largely programming based roles from low level PLC programming to higher level application program development, to robotics integration and digital twin.

Working with UKAEA scientists and engineers in projects to produce, improve and use advanced codes that get the most out of computing platforms at Culham and elsewhere, with an emphasis on portability and optimisation for applications and systems expected in the 2020s. The role will move from project to project spanning one or more of: big data science, science & engineering workflows, algorithms for High Performance Computing (HPC) and High Throughput Computing (HTC). In some cases the work will involve collaborations with other organisations as part of the UK or European initiatives.

Other programmes of work across UKAEA could also include supporting in maintaining and updating software, writing, configuring and testing of control, data acquisition, analysis and archiving systems.

Our scheme is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) and the Institute of Physics (IoP) as a professional development scheme
