Fresher checklist 2019
The grades are in, your university place has been secured after a few nail-biting months of anticipation, and you're ready to fly the nest. Heading off to University is an exciting yet daunting time of our young adult lives, on one hand the transition is full of change and nerve-wracking experiences as you meet new people and familiarise yourself you're your surroundings, and on the other it's the start of one of life's most thrilling journey's. If you've been used to your parents making life easy for you, then you'll soon need to learn how to take care of yourself and understand the many dials on a washing machine.
If your big move from family home to freshers' digs is on the horizon, then you might be wondering what items you'll need to pack for the start of your new life. Don't worry, everyone else will be in the same boat and asking the same questions as you. This list of essentials is sure to help you with the first step...
All of the essential bedding
It's worth checking if your halls provide any bedding for you, but either way, you will want to bring a set of your own. A mattress protector, sheets, pillow cases, a duvet and pillows are all essentials that you'll need to add to your uni shopping list. Just be sure to check the size of your bed before you make your purchase! You should also check out some of the various department stores that offer student ranges at purse-friendly price points.
Must-have electrical items
Once you've purchased your bedding, you should think about the various different electrical items you will need to bring, or purchase, for your big move to University. Essentials include your laptop, phone and tablet, but you may also want to bring items such as extension leads, fairy lights and speakers. If you want to avoid last-minute panics and ensure efficiency, then it's definitely worth buying a printer and cartridges of your own. This way you can avoid the printer queues, but just don't shout too loud about this handy addition in your room!
The necessary kitchen supplies
If you struggle to rustle up any meals beyond beans on toast in the kitchen, then now might be a good time to test yourself and learn a few basic staple meals! On your list you should have a saucepan, frying pan, baking tray, sieve, knives, chopping board, Tupperware, grater, wooden spoon and tin opener. Perhaps a few student cookbooks wouldn't go a miss either - Jamie Oliver who?
Toiletries for your bathroom
There's a long list of personal care items that you will probably take with you to University, but the essentials include flannels, towels, a toothbrush, painkillers, nail clippers, shampoo, sanitary items and a razor. If you have a long way to travel then you might decide to buy these items on your first day/week of settling in to your new home. Don't forget to bring any medication, and also register with a local doctor.
